MetaMask въвежда доходна парична сметка в блокчейна Monad

A new feature, Money Account, has been launched by MetaMask, integrating stablecoin yield, payments, and trading within its self-custody wallet. This development offers users a variable annual percentage yield (APY) of up to 4% through decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols. The MetaMask Card facilitates direct spending of funds held in Money Account. This initiative aligns with a broader trend in the cryptocurrency industry to transform digital wallets into comprehensive financial applications. Money Account expands MetaMask's existing functionalities beyond basic cryptocurrency holding and trading. The product's rollout was announced on Tuesday.

Стратегическо разширяване и пазарно позициониране на MetaMask

The introduction of Money Account reflects the increasing competition between cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges to become primary financial interfaces for users. These platforms are progressively incorporating lending, payment, and savings tools. Concurrently, stablecoins are gaining recognition among traditional banks and financial institutions outside the immediate cryptocurrency sector. MetaMask aims to evolve its platform into a global money operating system, enabling users to trade various tokens, markets, or asset classes, and to seamlessly earn and spend while maintaining control over their funds. A representative for MetaMask stated that the company does not consider itself a financial services provider, despite integrating features commonly associated with digital banking.

Оперативни детайли и потребителско изживяване

Money Account operates on the Monad blockchain and utilizes MetaMask's mUSD stablecoin, which was introduced in the previous year. User deposits can be allocated to DeFi lending protocols, with Morpho supported at launch and Aave anticipated to be integrated subsequently. Returns are generated continuously, net of fees, and are reflected in user balances. Johann Bornman, Senior Director of Product at MetaMask, indicated that user experience is a primary focus in product development. Bornman stated that the ultimate objective is to provide a neo-banking experience and simplify cryptocurrency complexities for users. Monad was selected following an evaluation of multiple blockchain networks, considering factors such as transaction costs, speed, and user experience.

Money Account is accessible globally, with the exception of the U.K. and other restricted jurisdictions. Eligible users automatically receive a Money Account within the MetaMask mobile application. Funds can be added through existing cryptocurrency transfers or fiat deposits via supported on-ramps. Bornman clarified that the stablecoin's reserve backing and yield generation operate as distinct systems. Bridge maintains the reserves, consisting of U.S. dollars and short-term Treasury bills, which provide the 1:1 backing for mUSD. When users deposit into Money Account, funds are deployed through Veda’s vault infrastructure into established DeFi lending protocols such as Aave and Morpho.

Регулаторна среда и доходност от стабилни монети

The launch of yield-bearing stablecoins coincides with ongoing regulatory discussions in Washington. In February, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency proposed rules to implement the GENIUS Act. These proposed rules could impose restrictions on certain third-party stablecoin rewards programs. Specifically, the rules propose to prohibit entities other than a “permitted payment stablecoin issuer” from issuing a payment stablecoin in the United States.

In April, the White House Council of Economic Advisers concluded that prohibiting stablecoin yield products would have a minimal impact on community bank lending. This finding contrasted with warnings issued by various banking groups. Later in April, senators involved in negotiating the Clarity Act, a crypto market structure bill, worked towards a compromise regarding whether cryptocurrency firms should be permitted to offer yield on stablecoin holdings.
